What is The Reporter?

In essence, I want to ask media creators my most burning questions about the job. Additionally, I want to learn about the present, or the “Information-Era”.. I want to learn about the future of journalism, how AI tools like ChatGPT are changing the working landscape, and I want to ask about how the current listening landscape is changing over time.
The Reporter is a student-driven podcast where RiceyWriter will interview creators in the Journalism/Media-Communication space. I want to find how greater trends affect the everyday reporter, so I’ll present the latest data from the likes of Pew and Reuters to see how it connects to our guest speakers’ jobs.
At its pinnacle, my loftiest of goals is to interview acclaimed editors and reporters from massive newsrooms like the New York Times or the Washington Post. As a career journalist, a Pulitzer is the ultimate prize, and hard-hitting interviews can be a bedrock of my service to the media landscape.
Communication is a study often overlooked because it is “easy” or because it is a social science. I’m here to challenge that notion and force listeners to think deeply about the world around them: how do celebrities or journalists talk, and how do they convey their agendas using as few words as possible?
When should I expect the show?
Expect my first interview-based show to come out on October 16th, 2025. The introductory episode is out now on all platforms, including YouTube. From there, I will be publishing twice monthly. One solo show and one interview.
Unfortunately, my production schedule is still tentative. I’ll be sure to transmit any changes to production/uploading as they come.
Other than the show, I’ll be a producer of articles and short-form content to engage with my audience. Frequency will fluctuate, but content will be produced as everything else is produced
Why start a Journalism Podcast?
My largest inspiration came from a football reporter whom I’ve interviewed a few times, NFL news writer Ben Arthur. He reports on the entire league and, most recently, is covering the Titans’ #1 draft pick Cam Ward.
His inspirational words told me all I needed. He said I was curious and could do the same types of interviews within a podcast format. That’s when I felt like I had enough courage to start, realizing that it’s not about what you do, it’s about why you do it.
This is being created to give local journalists the spotlight. We hear from reporters and content creators every day, but seldom hear about the “off-camera” work. Whether it’s working with an editor, finding a good story, or setting an agenda, I want to know all there is about the field.
I want to dive deep into different journalism jobs and tie everything back to what goes on behind the scenes.
Who are you going to interview?
I would like to interview reporters as well as students working in the field. I already have a couple of attainable guests in mind: my high school video teacher, a magazine writer, local content creators to whom I have ties, and perhaps Ben Arthur himself! So not only journalists and news analysts, but anyone in the space as a whole
Those are only the people I have on deck now. In the future, I want Seattle-area reporters, beat writers, professors, investigative journalists, as well as smaller content creators, podcasters, or journalism students, such as myself.
What qualifies you as a host?
I’m a journalism and communications student who finds the field absolutely fascinating.
Eventually, I would like to earn a journalism degree because learning about how people intake & exchange information is my kaleidoscope of intrigue. The outlook of the future of journalism and global news is something I take very seriously because it molds itself each day. From broadcast journalism to data-driven journalism coming out of research centers, humankind has more ways than ever to not only consume media but create and analyze it for themselves.
